Summer Fun and the Olympics

On THE ROAD to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Beijing!

DALLAS--It seems impossible, but school starts in a few weeks. The 100 degree heat has decended upon Dallas and most of Texas. And it's already Football season! To celebrate all of the above, I traveled with my family to the Rocky Mountains. My folks built a home atop a mountain at 8800 feet with supreme views of Pikes Peak, the Sangre de Cristo's and the Tarryalls with the Collegiates peeking up on the western horizon. After getting acclaimated to the cool weather and altitude, we headed to the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. It of course is where George Custer, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull met on the field of battle and well, um Custer lost. The site is haunting and it was packed with travelers on their way to Sturgis on their Harley's and in RV's galore. The story is so powerful. I loved it. We stayed in Sheridan, Wyoming and visited Fort Phil Kearny, the site of the Fetterman battle and the Wagon Box fight, both fascinating parts of American history. The battlesite on Rosebud Creek is nearby and we visited that hollowed place as well. My mother the venerable Dr. Fran Vick served as tour director and we loved our time exploring those battlefields and historical monuments. After returning back to Dallas, my family and I have settled into our new favorite family activity: Watching the Summer Olympics. It's fun to be able to root for great performances regardless of nationality. All in all the summer's been way too short, as usual, it''ll be Christmas before you all know it and hopefully "The Road" be on everyone's mind when they're thinking of that perfect stocking stuffer! PEACE!
